The most anticipated Android handset of the year continues to elude public knowledge – Samsung’s Galaxy S III. The latest word on the follow-up to last year’s phone of the year is that it won’t be shown off at a Samsung event on the 22nd of March. After Samsung denied that we’d see the new handset at the Mobile World Congress at the end of February, all attention naturally turned to that March 22nd date, as the next known Samsung event. With this subsequent denial, we may not see the Galaxy S III until May at the earliest.
That may allow Samsung to minimise the gap between its announcement and availability in the US (a problem that affected the Galaxy S II), but also gives its rivals HTC, LG and Motorola a lot of time in order to announce and potentially release their own next-generation handsets. It also opens the door to smaller firms like Huawei and Fujitsu, both of which are expected to launch handsets at the MWC. It’s a risky move for Samsung – but one that they can afford, given their success last year. If they’re able to bring the Galaxy S III to market with more advanced technology not too much after their rivals, they might be able to continue their spell of Android dominance.
