In the week before the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the world appears to have gone crazy, with handset manufacturers seeking to out-do each other by revealing just a little bit more than their rivals. LG have definitely been near the head of the pack, having revealed five mobiles this week: The LG Optimus 3D Cube and 3D Max, and the LG L Series. I’ll write more about the LG Optimus 3D later (summary: two thinner versions of the LG Optimus 3D) so let’s have a look at the bigger announcement, the LG L Series.
The L Series is made up of three phones: The L7, the L5, and the L3. As you’d expect, as the numbers get higher the phones get better; consequently you’re looking at a low-range L3, mid-range L5 and top-range L7. We don’t know much about the phones, other than how they look, how big they are, and what OS they’ll come with (which does reveal a little bit extra.)
The L7 is a phone with a 4.3″ display and will come with Ice Cream Sandwich. That suggests a dual or quad core device, hopefully with a 720p display and all of the other usual accoutrements of flagship phones in 2012.
The L5 is slightly smaller, at 4″. That likely limits it to qHD or WVGA resolutions, but it will also come with Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s also likely a dual-core phone, albeit likely closer to the 1 GHz mark.
The L3 is smaller still, at 3.5″, and is the only one of the three to come with old-school Android Gingerbread. That points to a slower single core processor.
All of the phones will use the same metallic and psuedo-leather-backed design of the LG Prada 3.0, which most reviewers found pleasant enough. Hopefully they’ll including the Prada 3.0′s decent performance at a much lower pricetag and serve as popular phones for LG – they performed poorly in 2011 and ceded a lot of ground to their rivals at Samsung and HTC, so a strong MWC will be particularly important to the future of the company.
To see how they do, be sure to tune in next week when it all kicks off for real, and see how close my specification guesses come to the mark.
