Last week we had a look at the iPad 3 and its expected launch date of March 7th. This week, we’ll have a look at what’s been leaked and rumoured over the last week, including some rather concrete evidence of a dual core processor and a Retina Display. Let’s get right into it.
Display
The iPad 1 and iPad 2 both shipped with 9.7″ displays running at 1024 x 768, but it’s time for an upgrade. The new iPad is expected to come with a doubly dense screen at that same 9.7″ diagonal. The resolution will be 2048 x 1536, and should be good for a pixel density of 264 pixels per inch. That’s the same upgrade path that the iPhone took, so it makes sense here. MacRumors got a good look at an iPad 3 display under a microscope, and found clear signs of 4×4 pixels in the same size as 2×2 pixels on the iPad 2, making this a very likely iPad 3 feature.
Processor and Graphics
The iPad 3 is now expected to come with a high speed dual core processor, instead of the quad-core we’d all been hoping for. The new A5X chip will likely be just as fast as a quad-core would, with better speeds in individual apps but worse multitasking performance. We also expect a boost to graphical performance to keep up with the higher resolution display.
Camera
A Hong Kong blog say they’ve got a hold of an iPad 3, and it will include the same eight megapixel back-lit camera as the iPhone 4S. That’s a big step up from the 0.7 megapixel camera on the back of the current iPad.
Connectivity
Customers in the US and Germany will be pleased to know the iPad 3 may launch with LTE / 4G support. That’d give the iPad access to the fastest cellular data networks in the world for customers lucky enough to have them, although it’s not clear whether this feature will make it to release.
Size and Shape
According to the Hong Kong blog we mentioned earlier, the iPad 3 looks like it’ll employ a softer, more tapered look than its predecessor. You can see this in the image above.
Conclusion
So yeah – the new iPad 3. It looks quite mighty, if even some of these rumours are true and should be a great hit for Apple. For more coverage, stay tuned to the Pundit Report.
