After releasing the iOS 5 update, iOS 5.0.1, Apple has now initiated the process to tackle the battery issues plaguing the OS X Lion running MacBook Pro portable computers. Ever since the update to OS X Lion from Snow Leopard, portable Mac users have been facing a crippling loss in battery life – down from the previous 6 hours (under 10.6.6) to just over 2.5 hours under Lion (as of 10.7.2). Even though the problem has been faced by users from Day 1, Apple never seemed to acknowledge until now.
But now that the ball has begun rolling more users (1,2,3..) from the Apple forums at discussions.apple.com have claimed to have been contacted by Apple Advisors requesting information in order to help them solve the problem.
The problems faced by MacBook Pro users relate to heavy battery drain while doing relatively trivial tasks such as light browsing and an open Mail app. There are also reports of Macbook Pro users facing increased battery drain while the MacBook Pro is sleeping – up to 1 percent per 2 hours.
Update: An SMC update has been made available for MacBook Pro systems, though I do not believe this relates to the unexpected shut down issue.

If I had to make a guess, it’s partially to deal with http://www.topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/lawsuit-news/1382-apple-macbook-pro-defective-battery-class-action-lawsuit- where it has been observed (and I’ve seen this on my Early-2011 MBP with 10.6.8) that under heavy load the charger is insufficient to keep up and the system drains the battery to make up the difference. It sounds like the patch doesn’t completely fix the problem though…that would take a power supply that can output more than 85 W.

Thanks John. I was never aware there was a lawsuit against Apple due to those chargers. But the update that they released didn’t affect the 2010mbps.. don’t they have the same chargers?
